Russia Hit a Chinese Ship One Night Before Putin’s Beijing Summit

A Russian drone struck a Chinese-owned cargo ship in the Black Sea overnight, Ukraine announced Monday — one day before Russian President Vladimir Putin departs for a two-day state visit to Beijing to meet with Xi Jinping.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strike in a social media post, saying drones had targeted the Odesa region and that “one of the UAVs hit a vessel owned by China.” He pointedly added: “The Russians could not have been unaware of what vessel was at sea.”

Ukraine’s navy identified the ship as the KSL Deyang and said it was struck by a Shahed drone while entering port for loading. A navy spokesman told AFP that none of the crew — all Chinese citizens — were wounded and the vessel continued to its destination. Zelensky said Russia launched 524 attack drones and 22 missiles against Ukraine overnight.

Russia has not commented.

Putin’s Beijing visit, scheduled for May 19-20, was framed by the Kremlin as a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship. The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and “key international and regional issues,” per the Kremlin statement, and will sign a joint declaration at the conclusion of the visit.

The trip follows US President Donald Trump’s own state visit to China, which concluded May 15 — meaning Xi received both the American and Russian presidents within days of each other. Trump and Xi announced broad trade deals but made little visible progress on geopolitical issues, including Taiwan and the Iran war.

Russia and China signed a “no limits” strategic partnership in February 2022, days before Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, China has absorbed Russian fossil fuel exports shunned by Western buyers and provided the economic underpinning that has allowed Moscow to sustain the war under sanctions. Putin and Xi have met more than 40 times.

Xi has maintained an officially neutral stance on the Ukraine war, positioning China as a potential mediator — a posture that sits uneasily alongside the “no limits” framing and Beijing’s role as Russia’s primary commercial lifeline.

China’s foreign ministry has not commented. Zelensky’s framing — that Russia knew what it was hitting — is a direct accusation of deliberate targeting that, if accepted in Beijing, would create significant friction in the Russia-China relationship at the worst possible moment for Putin. If treated as an accident, it raises uncomfortable questions about the reliability of Russia’s military operations in waters where Chinese commercial shipping regularly passes.
