Sabrina Maddeaux Announces Candidacy for Conservatives: “Trudeau Abandoned My Generation”

Former Postmedia columnist Sabrina Maddeaux has officially thrown her hat into the political ring, announcing her candidacy for the Conservative Party in the upcoming federal election. Maddeaux, known for her sharp analysis and critical perspectives on political and economic issues, aims to represent the Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill riding.

Addressing her decision, Maddeaux highlighted the pressing need for change, particularly emphasizing her concerns as a renter and a millennial facing challenges in the housing market. In her statement on Wednesday, Maddeaux expressed her pride in being from Richmond Hill but lamented the growing difficulty of homeownership in the area.

“I am proud to be from Richmond Hill, but it’s also sadly a place where I may never be able to afford to own a home of my own,” Maddeaux said. “Like many millennials, I was locked out of home ownership after prices more than doubled in eight years under (Prime Minister Justin) Trudeau’s watch. It shouldn’t be a luxury to raise a family in the community you grew up in.”

The Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill riding is currently represented by Liberal MP Leah Taylor Roy, who defeated former Conservative deputy opposition leader Leona Alleslev in 2021. The next federal election is scheduled for October 2025 or earlier.

Maddeaux, born and raised in Richmond Hill, gained recognition as a Postmedia columnist for her fearless approach in challenging those in power. She has been particularly critical of the housing affordability crisis and the role of the Liberals in addressing inflation.

“Under Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, my generation has seen Canada go from a place where hard work brings opportunity to one where inheritance counts more than merit,” Maddeaux asserted. “As someone who has experienced the disastrous impacts of Trudeau’s reckless policies, I will fight hard to build Canada back to a place where each generation is better off than the last.”

In a recent op-ed for the National Post, Maddeaux outlined her concerns about the economic mobility and lost opportunities that have characterized Canada since 2015. She emphasized the need for fresh voices in Ottawa to address the affordability crisis, citing her personal experiences and commitment to advocating for those often overlooked by politicians.

“As a millennial, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to afford to buy a home of my own. I’m even less certain whether I’ll be able to do so in the community where I was born and raised… It disturbs me that, when I talk to other young Canadians, they’re often seriously thinking about leaving Ontario, if not the country entirely,” she wrote.

She added that “it makes [her] angry that all of this was preventable and, as it continues to get worse, our elected leaders continue to dodge responsibility and fail to act.”

“I suspect that’s because, unlike me, most of them have no direct experience with the disastrous impacts of their policy choices,” she quipped.

Maddeaux’s candidacy comes with a wealth of experience, including her role as a National Magazine Award-winning journalist and political commentator. She has been an outspoken advocate for the Jewish community and faced sanctions from Russian authorities in 2022 for her criticism of the Vladimir Putin regime.

“Under Trudeau, Canada has become a shell of its former self,” Maddeaux asserted. “We need to get back to standing up for what’s right, not just issuing feel-good press statements, to defend democracy and freedom both at home and abroad.”

Maddeaux, who holds a Canadian Securities Course (CSC) certification, has been a prominent figure in Canadian media. She is recognized for her bold opinions, sharp analysis, and the ability to provide authoritative commentary on various political and economic issues.

The seasoned journalist, having moderated events for organizations like the Economic Club of Canada and the Scotiabank Giller Prize, is now poised to bring her unique perspective to the federal political landscape. As the next election approaches, Maddeaux aims to contribute to building a Canada “where every generation is better off than the last.”
