US Seeks Long-Term Military Rights In Greenland

  • Greenland’s strategic value is now being measured not only in runways and radar coverage, but in who gets to shape the island’s capital flows before any future independence settlement.

Washington’s Greenland strategy is moving beyond military access and into control over the island’s future investment choices, raising the prospect that a future independent Greenland could inherit limits on both its security policy and its major foreign deals before it becomes a state.

The New York Times, citing interviews with officials in Washington, Copenhagen, and Greenland, reported that the US is trying to alter a long-running military arrangement so American forces could remain in Greenland indefinitely, even if the island becomes independent from Denmark. The same investigation said US officials have also pushed for effective veto power over major investment agreements in Greenland to keep out strategic competitors such as China and Russia.

While a basing arrangement can be presented as Arctic defense, a power to block investment would reach into the machinery of Greenland’s future economy, especially as the island’s mineral potential becomes more important to Western supply-chain strategy.

Greenland is not negotiating from a blank slate. The US already has military access through the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement between Washington and Copenhagen, which remains the legal architecture behind US operations on the island. Reuters reported that the agreement gives Washington broad military rights in Greenland.

The central US asset is Pituffik Space Base, formerly Thule Air Base, on Greenland’s northwestern coast. AP has described Pituffik as the northernmost US Department of Defense installation, with roles in missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance for the US and NATO.

The current talks show Washington is looking for more than maintenance of that existing footprint. Reuters reported that Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen confirmed negotiations with the US that include an increased American military presence in the Arctic territory. Those discussions follow President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring or controlling Greenland, which has strained relations with Greenland, Denmark, and NATO allies.

The military proposal is already politically sensitive. Reuters also mentioned that US concerns over surveillance and national security have driven talks over possible new military sites, including a reported US proposal for three bases in southern Greenland. Two locations identified by local media are Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq, both former US bases with existing infrastructure, while a third location has not been publicly named.

Greenland sits between North America, the Arctic, and Europe, and Washington sees the island as part of its security perimeter. Reuters has reported that US officials view surveillance and national security concerns as drivers of the current military discussions.

But the structure of the reported demand would create a different political problem. Greenland could one day separate from Denmark while entering independence with inherited commitments that restrict its room to bargain with other states and investors. That would make independence less a clean transfer of authority than a managed transition inside a US security framework.

For Denmark, the pressure runs in both directions. Copenhagen remains responsible for defense and foreign policy for the self-governing territory, yet Greenland’s elected leaders are the ones who would live with any long-term limits attached to the island’s future. A deal that looks durable from Washington could look like pre-committed sovereignty from Nuuk.

The timing adds to the optics. Reuters reported that US special envoy Jeff Landry, appointed in 2025 to pursue American control of Greenland, arrived in Nuuk on May 17, 2026, ahead of the “Future Greenland” business conference. The US embassy said the visit was aimed at economic cooperation, personal connections, and mutual understanding.

No official meetings with Greenlandic political leaders had been confirmed at the time of the Reuters report.
