US Military Bases in Europe Heighten Security Amid Terrorism Concerns

Several US military installations across Europe have raised their alert levels due to potential terrorist threats. The US Army garrison in Stuttgart, Germany, home to the US European Command headquarters, elevated its force protection condition to “Charlie” on Sunday.

This level indicates a likelihood of terrorist action against personnel or facilities.

Similar measures were implemented at other bases in Germany, including Rheinland-Pfalz and Ramstein Air Base, as well as at Aviano Air Base in Italy. The heightened security extends to installations in Romania and Bulgaria.

US European Command (USEUCOM) told The Hill that it continuously assesses factors affecting the safety of US military personnel abroad and takes necessary precautions. However, specific details were withheld for security reasons.

The elevated threat level is expected to cause significant delays at base entry points and has led to service reductions on some installations. In Spangdahlem, airmen were instructed to wear civilian clothing when off-base, according to the independent military publication Stars and Stripes.

This increase in security measures comes amid rising concerns about terrorism threats, particularly following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. FBI Director Christopher Wray recently emphasized the escalated threat from foreign terrorists in a Senate testimony.
