Westinghouse and Aecon Forge $20 Billion Nuclear Partnership in Canada
In a groundbreaking move, Westinghouse Electric Company has announced a $20 billion partnership with Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE). The deal aims to accelerate the construction of advanced nuclear reactors, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s pursuit of clean energy and economic growth.
The partnership centers on the construction of Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactors, known for their safety, efficiency, and minimal environmental impact. Under the strategic cooperation agreement, the companies will explore opportunities to build these reactors in various Canadian markets. A single four-unit AP1000 project is projected to contribute approximately $28.7 billion to Canada’s GDP.
Aecon previously provided critical nuclear-class AP1000 modules for the Vogtle Unit 3 and 4 projects in Georgia, USA, and will utilize its 120,000 square-foot fabrication and modularization facility in Cambridge, Ontario, for the upcoming projects.
Each four-unit AP1000 project is expected to create nearly 8,000 Canadian jobs during construction and an additional 12,000 full-time jobs for ongoing operations.
Dan Lipman, President of Westinghouse Energy Systems, emphasized the economic benefits, stating, “By partnering with Aecon, we are underscoring our commitment to helping to ensure that nuclear new-build projects of all scales will benefit the Canadian economy by employing local trades and creating jobs in Canada.”
John Gorman, President of Westinghouse Canada, noted, “With Canada’s urgent need to bring more nuclear generation online to meet its objectives, the proven, fully operational AP1000 reactor becomes the natural choice because it can be deployed now.”
This collaboration is expected to enhance Canada’s industrial capabilities, providing opportunities for expansion and diversification by supporting advanced nuclear technologies globally.
