Former US Senator Robert “Bob” Menendez was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Wednesday for accepting bribes and acting as an agent of Egypt while in office.
US District Judge Sidney H. Stein imposed the sentence in Manhattan after FBI agents found $480,000 in cash hidden in boots and clothing at Menendez’s New Jersey home, along with gold bars worth $150,000.
Prosecutors proved the Democrat used his position as Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman to assist Egyptian officials and three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for bribes. His actions included leaking information about US Embassy staff in Cairo and promoting $300 million in military aid to Egypt.
Two co-defendants received prison terms. Real estate developer Fred Daibes, 67, got seven years, while entrepreneur Wael Hana received eight years. A third businessman previously pleaded guilty and testified for prosecutors.
Menendez expressed remorse during sentencing but later maintained his innocence outside court — he criticized the judicial system and aligned with former President Donald Trump’s recent statements about New York courts.
Menendez is the fifth US senator to receive an upheld conviction while serving in office. He surrendered his committee chairmanship when charged in 2023 and resigned a month after his conviction.
Evidence showed Menendez intervened in criminal investigations and helped secure a Mercedes-Benz convertible for his wife Nadine through businessman Jose Uribe. She faces trial in March on related charges.
The former senator’s sentence was well below the 24-30-year guideline range for his crimes. Stein cited his age, health, and public service as factors contributing to this decision.
Menendez must report to prison by June 6.

Menendez knows no other way than the corruption way. He has bribed and stolen and perjured himself until it caught up with him. Even complaining about the very lenient sentence he did receive. He had the use of an Eye surgeon’s plane to fly into the Caribbean to hook up with little girls. He tried to get the Buddy eye surgeon off the hook for excessive Medicare and Medicaid billing but it did not work and the eye surgeon went to prison while Menendez went through 2 trials and magically beat the rap and still stayed in the Senate. I love the way he sniveled and insulted President Trump attempting to make His Own Criminality seem miniscule. What a L:OSER and CON MAN.
