A judicial recount in Quebec has awarded the Terrebonne riding to the Liberal Party by a razor-thin margin of a single vote, bringing Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government within striking distance of a parliamentary majority.
Elections Canada confirmed Liberal Tatiana Auguste received 23,352 votes compared to Bloc Québécois incumbent Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné’s 23,351 votes, according to Canadian Press.

The result brings Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals to 170 seats in the House of Commons, two short of the 172 needed for a majority government. Conservatives hold 143 seats, Bloc Québécois 22, New Democratic Party (NDP) seven, and Green Party one.
Auguste was initially projected to win by 35 votes after the April 28 election, but the mandatory validation process conducted May 1 reversed the outcome, putting Sinclair-Desgagné ahead by 44 votes.
A judicial recount is automatically triggered under Canadian election law when the margin between candidates is less than 0.1% of valid votes cast.
The Terrebonne recount, overseen by Superior Court of Quebec Justice Danielle Turcotte, added 74 votes to the total count. Auguste gained 56 votes while Sinclair-Desgagné received 11 additional votes. The Conservative candidate gained five votes and the NDP candidate four.
Three additional recounts are underway, one in Newfoundland and Labrador and two in Ontario. In Newfoundland’s Terra Nova-The Peninsulas riding, Liberal Anthony Germain leads Conservative Jonathan Rowe by 12 votes, with the recount scheduled to begin Monday.
In Ontario, Liberal Kristina Tesser Derksen leads Conservative Parm Gill by 29 votes in Milton East-Halton Hills South. Meanwhile, in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore, a recount was granted after Liberal incumbent Irek Kusmierczyk disputed rejected ballots in his 77-vote loss to Conservative challenger Kathy Borrelli.
