UPDATED: US Reportedly Rescues Second F-15E Crew Member in Iran After Intense Firefight

US forces have successfully rescued the second crew member of an F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over Iran, following a heavy firefight, a government official repirtedly confirmed to Al Jazeera. The rescue marks a critical development in the ongoing conflict as tensions with Iran continue to spiral.

UPDATE: Al Jazeera is now reporting that the airman has been “recovered” but the rescue mission remains ongoing, with the airman not yet exfiltrated from Iran.

The operation unfolded after the two-seat fighter jet was downed on Friday, the first US combat aircraft lost to enemy fire in over two decades. One pilot was initially rescued, while the search for the second extended into Saturday. Iranian officials had denied reports of detaining the missing airman, with local authorities and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps rejecting claims circulated by semi-official media.

Iranian firepower complicated the rescue efforts, striking a US A-10 Thunderbolt dispatched to support the mission. The single-seat aircraft crashed in Kuwaiti airspace after the pilot ejected safely. Military helicopters also sustained hits, though no crew injuries were reported in those incidents. Debris images purportedly from the F-15E surfaced on Iranian Telegram channels, though the Pentagon has yet to confirm the loss officially.

The incident casts a shadow over US and Israeli assertions of dominance over Iranian airspace. A military spokesperson in Iran seized on the event, declaring that advanced air defense systems developed domestically are being deployed in real-time operations. They vowed to achieve full control over their skies and expose enemy vulnerabilities.

President Trump, in a brief phone call on Friday, dismissed concerns that the downing would derail negotiations to end the war, stating bluntly, “No, not at all. No, it’s war.” On Truth Social, he reiterated a 48-hour deadline for Iran to comply with US demands or face severe repercussions, specifically referencing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil exports.

Iran, however, insists no direct talks are underway with the US. The elimination of much of its government and military leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has left uncertainty over who could represent Tehran in potential negotiations.

The war, now in its 36th day as of Saturday, has claimed over a dozen American service members’ lives since the joint US-Israeli offensive began. Trump, in a televised address on Wednesday, predicted the conflict’s end within two to three weeks while threatening to strike Iran “back to the Stone Ages” if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials had offered a $60,000 reward for locals to locate the missing US airman, a plea issued publicly on Friday. With both crew members now accounted for, the focus shifts to the broader strategic implications of sustained Iranian resistance.

US troop mobilizations to the region have surged, with thousands more deployed in recent days. The conflict’s toll continues to mount, reshaping geopolitical and economic calculations tied to Middle Eastern stability.

  1. Crashed in Kuwaiti airspace? I don’t think so. It might have crashed in Kuwaiti territorial waters or actual Kuwaiti land, but nothing crashes in ‘airspace’.
