Canada and Germany today signed a joint declaration to co-fund critical mineral projects and deepen energy ties, with two special envoys appointed to drive delivery.
Ottawa named Isabella Chan, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister at Natural Resources Canada, as Canada’s Special Envoy, while Berlin named Matthias Koehler, Deputy Director General of Raw Materials Policy, as its counterpart.
The pact targets secure supply chains, joint R&D, and project co-financing across EV manufacturing, defense, and aerospace. It builds on the Canada-led Critical Minerals Production Alliance introduced at this year’s G7 in Kananaskis.
Industry agreements accompanied the announcement:
- Troilus Gold (TSX: TLG) reached a long-term supply deal with Aurubis for a significant portion of future copper concentrate.
- Torngat Metals and Vacuumschmelze signed an MoU for separated rare earth oxides.
- Rock Tech Lithium (TSXV: RCK) signed an MoU with Enertrag to power its Guben converter with solar and offshore wind.
Beyond minerals, Canada will begin LNG supply discussions with German buyers and advance the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance to develop a transatlantic hydrogen trade corridor.
“Canada has immense potential to be a leading and reliable global supplier of critical minerals,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said, calling Germany a “natural strategic partner.”
Both governments plan to carry the file through the Canada-Germany Energy Partnership and into this fall’s G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting in the Greater Toronto Area.
