Elon Musk Criticizes “Legacy Media”, But Is X Amplifying A One-Sided Narrative?

In a series of posts, Elon Musk criticized the media for its reporting on the suspect behind a deadly attack at a German Christmas market. The attack, which killed five and injured more than 200, has been widely reported as an act motivated by Islamophobia, according to German authorities.

Musk’s commentary on the issue has drawn sharp criticism, particularly as new allegations emerge regarding his platform, X (formerly Twitter), and its role in shaping public narratives.

The incident occurred at a crowded Christmas market in Germany, a beloved holiday tradition. The suspect, reportedly harboring far-right and Islamophobic views, drove a vehicle into the market, resulting in multiple fatalities and significant injuries. German officials have described the attack as hate-motivated and are continuing to investigate the suspect’s history, including inflammatory posts made on social media platforms.

“Legacy media lies again”

Musk weighed in on the reporting of the attack by reposting headlines from outlets such as NBC News, France 24, and MSNBC, writing, “Legacy media lies again.” His critique appeared to question the framing of the suspect as Islamophobic, despite German authorities confirming this characterization.

In a subsequent post on X, Musk stated: “Most people in Europe still think the legacy press is real, when it is pure propaganda.”

Musk’s remarks coincided with allegations that X had manipulated information related to the suspect. Digital watchdog group MenchOsint claimed that X deleted historical posts tied to the suspect and deactivated search functionality on their profile, making it difficult for users to verify their social media activity.

MenchOsint stated: “X, after reinstating the terrorist’s profile, has deleted all posts before November 2024. They also deactivated search function on his profile… Why? Probably because it helps the ‘far-right’ narrative.”

These claims have not been independently verified, but they align with broader concerns about how X’s content moderation policies have shifted under Musk’s leadership.

Musk and Platform Moderation

Since acquiring X in 2022, Musk has championed “free speech,” a principle he argues is central to the platform’s mission. However, critics have pointed out that this often comes at the expense of moderating harmful content, with many banned accounts reinstated under his tenure, including those accused of promoting hate speech.

X has previously faced backlash for amplifying extremist content through its algorithmic recommendations, an issue watchdogs say may contribute to radicalization. Musk’s personal involvement in platform governance has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, especially as he continues to influence public conversations.

The outlets Musk targeted—NBC News, France 24, and MSNBC—have consistently cited German law enforcement as the basis for their reporting. German authorities have publicly stated that the suspect identified as Islamophobic and harbored anti-Muslim sentiments.

Responding to criticism of its coverage, NBC News noted in an earlier statement, published after similar incidents, that its reporting relies on “information provided by law enforcement and credible sources.” While the outlet has not directly addressed Musk’s accusations, experts argue that media outlets are fulfilling their duty by reporting verified details.

The suspect’s views highlight broader concerns about hate-driven violence in Europe, much of which has been linked to online radicalization. Social media platforms like X play a significant role in shaping public discourse, with critics warning that lax moderation can create echo chambers for extremism.

Musk’s rhetoric has intensified these debates, particularly as X continues to host controversial accounts and content. Analysts warn that downplaying the suspect’s Islamophobic motivations risks normalizing hate-fueled violence.
