Hall vs Oates: Hall Files for a Restraining Order

Hall & Oates, the iconic pop-R&B duo, find themselves entangled in a confidential legal dispute, resulting in Daryl Hall obtaining a restraining order against his musical partner, John Oates.

Details of the lawsuit, filed by Hall on November 16, and the feud remain out of reach as court documents are sealed. All we know is that it is classified as a “contract/debt” matter.

Philadelphia Magazine on Monday reported the filing of the motion for a temporary restraining order, officially granted by the Nashville Chancery Court, set to take effect on November 30.

The legal conflict follows Hall’s public remarks on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast last year, where he said that the partnership with Oates, whom he called his brother, is more of business partnership rather than a creative one.

The comments section is out of control

“John and I are brothers, but we are not creative brothers. We are business partners. We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me,” he said.

It seems like whatever it is, it’s been brewing for some time. Last year, while discussing his solo record, Hall told the LA Times “It’s very annoying to be a duo.”

He elaborated, saying: “Everything you do is juxtaposed against another person. Try doing that sometime. I don’t want to use the word ‘emasculating,’ because that’s male, but it takes away your individuality.”

Hall & Oates formed their duo in 1970 and have achieved considerable success, including six No. 1 singles. They have performed and toured separately but have never really officially disbanded. The duo last performed together in October 2022.
