Mexican Senate Sanctions US Military Deployment For Training

Reports have emerged confirming the arrival of US Army Special Forces units in Mexico to conduct training exercises with Mexican military personnel. The operation, centered on a naval facility in Campeche, has been officially sanctioned by the Mexican Senate’s Naval Ministry Commission and is being overseen by Mexico’s Defense Ministry.

The US Army’s 7th Special Forces Group launched its exercises alongside Mexico’s Infantería de Marina in mid-February, with the mission set to continue until the end of March 2025.

Official statements underscore that the training is designed to bolster Mexican forces’ capabilities rather than establish a US-led combat presence. Through this partnership, US Green Berets share specialized expertise in conventional and unconventional warfare, while Mexico maintains control of the operational environment on its territory.

However, signals intelligence flights by US Air Force reconnaissance planes along the border and near cartel strongholds prompted speculation that the stage might be set for deeper involvement.

Earlier, Trump’s designation of cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations” has spurred speculation about potential future actions, including the possibility of US Special Forces taking more direct measures if the Mexican government falls short of curbing cartel violence.

The US military recently bolstered its southern border security, and there have been simultaneous troop commitments from neighboring countries, reflecting a heightened regional response to cartel activity. Additional pressure could emerge through financial sanctions targeting cartel finances, as well as possible diplomatic tensions with countries that supply raw materials for dangerous drugs.

Analysts warn that any escalation, such as a direct confrontation between US troops and cartels, could trigger retaliatory measures in Mexico or even across US cities.
