NDP MP Receives Backlash for Tweet About Death of Woman Who Was Denied A Transplant

Charlie Angus, NDP MP for Timmins—James Bay, Ontario, is receiving flak after he condemned Pierre Poilievre’s recent tweet regarding the tragic passing of Alberta resident Sheila Annette Lewis. Lewis was denied a crucial transplant due to her Covid-19 vaccine status.

Angus expressed his dismay over the spread of disinformation and conspiracy theories, noting that such actions have real-life consequences.

Angus criticized Poilievre for perpetuating anti-vax conspiracies and supporting a candidate who had been ousted from Doug Ford’s caucus. He accused Poilievre of promoting extremism within his party. Poilievre had responded to a tweet by Conservative candidate Roman Babar for York Centre, praising Babar’s stance on Lewis’s situation.

Babar emphasized that denying Lewis a transplant based on her vaccine choice was unacceptable and violated the Canada Health Act’s prohibition against discrimination. He pledged to continue fighting against such injustices.

Many agreed with Babar and Poilievre’s take on the issue, and Angus received backlash for his initial, now-deleted tweet.

The passing of Sheila Annette Lewis has drawn attention to the ethical and legal concerns surrounding her case. The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) underscored the potential implications of such decisions, suggesting that Lewis’s denial from the transplant list over her vaccination status might have contributed to her untimely death.
