Russia’s Luna-25 Spacecraft Crashes Into Moon, Top Advisor to the Failed Mission Suffers ‘Sharp Deterioration’ in Health

In a setback to Russia’s aspirations in space, the Luna 25, its first lunar mission in nearly half a century, tragically crashed onto the moon’s surface.

The robotic spacecraft lost communication with Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, which later confirmed that efforts to re-establish contact failed. During its approach, Luna 25 had encountered an “emergency situation,” preventing the successful completion of its landing maneuver.

Launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on August 10, the Luna 25 aimed to be Russia’s first successful lunar landing since 1976, armed with the primary objective to study the moon’s soil and its tenuous exosphere for a year. The south pole region, a scarcely explored lunar area believed to contain frozen water, was its intended destination. As it raced towards the moon, the Luna 25 overtook India’s Chandrayaan-3, which had launched a month earlier; it’s worth noting, however, that both these missions have been in development for over a decade, debunking speculations of a space race.

The Luna 25 had originally been a collaboration between Roscosmos and the European Space Agency, but the partnership ended after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Had Luna 25 succeeded, it would’ve signaled a massive leap for Russia’s space program, plagued by challenges like quality control, corruption, and funding.

On a more somber note, following the crash, Mikhail Marov— a top astronomer intimately involved in the Luna-25 project, coincidentally suffered severe health complications shortly after he called for an inquest into the failed expedition, as per the Daily Mail. The 90-year-old professor, described Luna-25 as his “last hope” for Russia’s lunar endeavors, and urged full transparency into the expedition’s unfortunate end and stressed the need for continued space exploration by Russia.

Speculations are rife regarding the repercussions of the Luna-25 debacle, as many anticipate a blame game within Russia’s political corridors. With claims of endemic corruption within Roscosmos already surfacing, key figures may face scrutiny and potential consequences from Russian president Vladimir Putin, who will likely accuse them of humiliating the country.
