Singh Faces Uphill Battle as NDP Campaign Struggles

New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh is fighting for his political survival as his campaign fails to gain traction with Canadian voters in the federal election.

Recent polling shows the NDP at just 7% support nationally, with projections indicating the party could win as few as three seats — well below the 12 needed to maintain official party status in Canada’s Parliament.

Singh himself risks losing his Burnaby Central seat in British Columbia, according to a Global News seat projection model that shows Liberal candidate Wade Chang currently leading in the riding.

“I’m running in this election to fight for you, not the billionaires,” Singh said at campaign events, a message he has repeated throughout his campaign.

The NDP leader has attempted to distinguish his party by focusing on healthcare promises and criticizing both Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Liberal Leader Mark Carney on their economic policies.

Political observers have noted a shift in Singh’s typically energetic campaign style, with National Post columnist John Ivison describing “an air of resignation” about the leader who appears to “know that his time in federal politics is coming to an end.”

Singh has led the NDP since 2017, but his party faces an existential threat as Liberal Leader Mark Carney successfully courts progressive voters who traditionally supported the New Democrats.

The party won 24 seats in the 2021 election. Losing official party status would mean a significant reduction in research funding, staff, and question period slots in Parliament.

Ipsos polling indicates the Liberals at 45% support nationally, with the Conservatives making gains among the NDP’s traditional blue-collar base.
