An overwhelming 82% of Canadians would prefer to rejoin the British Empire rather than become the 51st US state, according to a new poll that reasserts strong resistance to Trump’s recent suggestions that Canada could become the 51st US state.

The survey, conducted by J&L Partners for the Daily Mail, shows that even among Conservative Party voters, 68% would choose returning to the British fold over joining the United States.

On the question of leadership, Canadians also prefer King Charles III as their head of state over Trump by a significant margin, with 54% choosing the British monarch compared to just 15% for the former US president. Another 31% remained undecided.

Trump repeatedly suggested the possibility of Canada joining the United States, claiming in February that “a lot of people in Canada are liking becoming our beautiful, cherished 51st state. They’ll have to pay much lower taxes.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly rejected the idea, stating that Canada “will never be part of the US.”

The results show that Canadians across the political spectrum have little interest in becoming part of the US. Liberal Party supporters overwhelmingly back the British monarch (76%) over Trump (4%). Similarly, members of the center-left New Democratic Party prefer Charles by a margin of 65% to 8%. 

Even with Conservative Party members, who might be expected to have more sympathy for Trump’s policies, Charles maintains an advantage, though by a narrower margin of 37% to 31%.

The poll also indicates that if Canada were to hypothetically join the US, it would likely strengthen Democratic representation in Congress, with 43% of Canadians saying they would join the Democratic Party compared to just 18% who would align with Republicans.

The survey also found that 55% of Canadians favor stripping Tesla CEO and Trump ally Elon Musk of his Canadian citizenship, while only 19% oppose such a move.
