Trump To Revive Cold War-Era Act to Shield US Uranium Supply

President Donald Trump is reportedly set to invoke the Defense Production Act—a Cold War-era wartime statute—to declare a national emergency over US dependence on foreign uranium and jumpstart domestic nuclear energy supply chains.

Four sources told Reuters the executive orders, expected as soon as Friday, will streamline regulatory approvals for advanced reactors and bolster mining and processing of enriched uranium.

Under the president’s “National Energy Emergency,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright has characterized the effort as a “Manhattan Project 2,” reflecting the urgency of securing fuel for data center–driven power demand. A draft summary reviewed by Reuters indicates the orders direct federal agencies to identify lands and facilities suitable for nuclear development, while simplifying permitting and construction timelines.

The orders also instruct the Energy and Defense Departments to accelerate deployment strategies and authorize the Energy Department to deploy loan guarantees and direct financing for reactor projects. Although the Loan Programs Office now manages hundreds of billions in funding, it has endured significant staff cuts under the current administration.

Despite the US’ historic leadership in nuclear capacity, the industry’s fastest growth is unfolding in China. Nuclear power enjoys rare bipartisan appeal—praised by Democrats for its low carbon footprint and by Republicans for reliability—but faces a perennial impasse over waste disposal.

Representatives from major stakeholders—including the Nuclear Energy Institute and utility Constellation—have been reportedly invited to Friday’s signing ceremony.
