Defense Dept Chooses Musk’s xAI, Grok In Military AI

  • An agreement sets xAI’s Grok models for early-2026 IL5 deployment inside GenAI.mil, extending access across the Defense Department’s stated 3 million military and civilian users.

The Department of Defense (being referred to now as Department of War) says it has formally entered an agreement with xAI to embed xAI’s “frontier AI systems,” based on the Grok family of models, directly into its GenAI.mil platform, with initial deployment targeted for early 2026.

In its press release, the department frames the deal as an expansion of GenAI.mil, which it describes as a recently launched bespoke AI platform, and positions the xAI integration as part of “rapid deployment” of AI across a stated base of 3 million military and civilian personnel.

The operational hinge is Impact Level 5. The release says the xAI integration will allow personnel to use xAI capabilities at IL5, “enabling the secure handling of Controlled Unclassified Information in daily workflows,” which is the department’s stated rationale for making the tools broadly usable.

Beyond model access, the department also says users “will gain access to real-time global insights from the X platform,” describing that feed as providing a “decisive information advantage” for personnel using GenAI.mil.

The department repeatedly characterizes the buildout as an ecosystem play, saying it will continue “scaling an AI ecosystem built for speed, security, and decision superiority,” and that “newly IL5-certified capabilities” will turn AI into a “daily operational asset” across the workforce.

The release discloses the stated user scale at 3 million. It did not disclose contract value, term length, pricing structure, procurement pathway, or any quantitative performance targets for the Grok-based capabilities on GenAI.mil.

xAI is Elon Musk’s AI company, launched in July 2023. Earlier in Donald Trump’s presidency, Musk held official advisory roles including chief of the Department of Government Efficiency, promising to cut $2 billion in government spending, primarily being privy to the government’s dealings and contractors.

He then publicly resigned after a massive spat between him and Trump about the administration’s signature tax-and-spending package and the Epstein files.
