Bluesky Daily Users Jump 500%, Narrowing Gap with Threads
Social media platform Bluesky has seen explosive growth following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, with US app and website usage increasing more than 500% to reach 3.5 million daily users, according to data from Similarweb.
The platform, launched in 2019 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has attracted academics, journalists, and left-leaning politicians departing Elon Musk’s X platform. Bluesky’s total user base has grown to 21.5 million, surpassing Meta‘s (Nasdaq: META) Threads in daily active users.
“We’ve been growing by about a million users a day for several days,” Bluesky CEO Jay Graber told NPR. The platform, led by the digital rights activist and software engineer, offers features similar to X, including text posts, multimedia sharing, and user interactions.
Recent events have accelerated Bluesky’s growth, including a September surge of 3 million new users during X’s temporary suspension in Brazil. An additional 1.2 million users joined after Musk announced changes to X’s blocking features.
Meta’s Threads, which previously held five times more daily US users than Bluesky, now leads by only 1.5 times. Analysts attribute this shift partly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to reduce political content across the company’s platforms.
