Canada Post Strike: Holiday Shopping Hit as Carriers Suspend Canada Service

The Canada Post strike has triggered a cascade of shipping disruptions, with major international carriers suspending service to Canada as the walkout enters its third week, severely impacting holiday season commerce.

The US Postal Service announced it will suspend deliveries to Canada effective November 29, while Britain’s Royal Mail and ParcelForce have also halted Canadian service, citing their reliance on Canada Post for final delivery.

The strike’s impact has spilled over to other carriers within Canada. Purolator has stopped accepting new orders amid overwhelming volume. (And interestingly, Purolator is almost entirely [91%] owned by Canada Post.)

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business estimates small business owners have already lost one billion dollars due to the strike, according to CFIB President and CEO Dan Kelly.

Alternative delivery services like UPS are reporting significant delays as they struggle to handle the surge in volume during the crucial holiday shopping period. Online retailers and small businesses have reported severe disruptions to their operations as available shipping options dwindle.

This widespread disruption threatens to further isolate Canadian businesses and consumers as the holiday season approaches, with no immediate resolution to the postal strike in sight.
