China Sanctions Pelosi Over Taiwan Visit, Ends Cooperation, Military Ties with the US

It turns out that Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan did not disappoint in terms of angering China, which on Friday announced a series of undisclosed sanctions against the house speaker herself, as well as an end to cooperation with the US on a number of key issues.

China has begun its infuriated retaliation campaign against the US, after Pelosi made an impromptu stop in the self-governing nation of Taiwan. The communist country halted all discussions with the US pertaining to military communication, anti-drug programs, and climate change. The foreign ministry announced that “in disregard of China’s strong opposition and serious representations, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China’s Taiwan region,” and as a result the US will be slapped with the following countermeasures:

Canceling China-U.S. Theater Commanders Talk; canceling China-U.S. Defense Policy Coordination Talks; canceling China-U.S. Military Maritime Consultative Agreement) meetings; suspending China-U.S. cooperation on the repatriation of illegal immigrants; suspending China-U.S. cooperation on legal assistance in criminal matters; suspending China-U.S. cooperation against transnational crimes; suspending China-U.S. counternarcotics cooperation; and, suspending China-U.S. talks on climate change.

In addition, the Chinese government also unveiled a series of unknown sanctions against Pelosi over the “egregious provocation” that her overnight trip caused. During her stay in Taiwan, China surrounded the island with live fire drills and conducted ballistic missile tests in the region. Washington’s National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby in response labeled China’s moves as an overreaction to what was merely “completely normal travel by congressional members to Taiwan.”
