GM Smashes Into EV Market with Electric Chevy Silverado to Rival Ford’s F-150 Lightening

General Motors unveiled its long-awaited all electric Chevy Silverado pickup truck on Wednesday, and it is expected to spur buzz across EV markets and heat up competition among rival automakers including Ford and Tesla.

As part of the CES tech conference in Las Vegas, GM CEO Mary Barra unveiled the automaker’s fully electric version of the flagship Chevy Silverado pickup truck. Although the specific details surrounding the truck’s specifications remained vague, the new truck is expected to rival Ford’s F-150 Lightening pickup, which has thus far seen unprecedented demand in pre-orders from consumers.

The plug-in version of the Silverado will run on GM’s latest Ultium EV platform— unlike rival Ford’s F-150 Lightening, which is just based on a modified version of the traditional F-150 model. The all-electric Chevy will also debut a 400 mile driving range on a single charge, a fixed-glass roof, as well as a four-wheel steering option. The automaker is expected to begin taking pre-orders on Wednesday following the official unveiling, with the truck slated to make its way to dealerships’ showrooms sometime in early 2023.

GM’s electric Silverado marks a broader move by the automaker to transition from traditional combustion engines and instead fully electrify its entire vehicle lineup. The company also unveiled a fully electric version of its popular Equinox crossover SUV, as well as a Blazer EV, both of which too, are expected to hit markets in 2023. Legacy carmakers have recently been in a heated competition to take control of the EV space, which has thus far been dominated by Tesla.

However, in an effort to further heighten competition against Tesla and make headway in the EV space, Barra also revealed on Wednesday that GM is planning to create a “personal autonomous vehicle” by mid-decade, which will be developed alongside its subsidiary Cruise, and will be designed specifically for personal use.
