The CIA delivered a confidential assessment to the White House this week, concluding that Iran can survive the US naval blockade for at least three to four months before facing severe economic hardship — and retains far more military firepower than Trump has publicly claimed.
The assessment, reported by the Washington Post and confirmed by four people familiar with the document, found Iran holds about 75% of its prewar inventories of mobile missile launchers and about 70% of its prewar ballistic missile stockpile. Trump claimed Wednesday that Iranian missiles are “mostly decimated” and down to “18, 19 percent” of what they had.
According to the Washington Post, citing people with knowledge on the matter, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) delivered a confidential assessment to administration officials with the key judgment that Iran can weather the U.S. blockade for at least three to four months.… pic.twitter.com/7tnnQds1ZQ

The CIA also found the regime had reopened almost all underground storage facilities whose entrances were bombed, repaired damaged missiles, and assembled new ones from components near completion when the war began.
The intelligence community has consistently offered a more sober picture than the administration’s official narrative. Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have described the war as an overwhelming US military victory and the blockade as an economically decisive stranglehold. The CIA’s classified analysis suggests neither characterization holds.

Trump has claimed the blockade denies Iran $500 million a day in oil export revenues. The CIA found Iran may supplement lost revenue through overland oil smuggling routes — meaning the three-to-four-month estimate could itself be conservative. One US official told the Post that Iran’s actual capacity to endure economic hardship is likely greater than even the CIA’s figure.
“The leadership has gotten more radical, determined and increasingly confident they can outlast US political will and sustain domestic repression to check any resistance,” the official said.
The CIA also noted the timeline for Iran to resume producing ballistic missiles in “significant quantities” has shortened — narrowing the window for any negotiated settlement that includes meaningful missile restrictions.
