Israel Awaits U.S. Approval to Resume Deadly Strikes on Iran’s Leadership and Infrastructure

Israel is poised to launch a renewed and intensified military campaign against Iran, awaiting final approval from the United States to target the country’s supreme leader and critical energy infrastructure. Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed on April 23, that the Israel Defense Forces are fully prepared, with specific targets already identified for strikes intended to deliver devastating blows.

Katz, speaking after a security assessment in Tel Aviv, described the planned offensive as fundamentally different from previous actions. He emphasized that the strikes would aim to “shake and collapse the foundations” of Iran’s leadership, including the elimination of the supreme leader and potential successors of the Khamenei dynasty. The operation would also focus on crippling Iran’s national infrastructure, with Katz warning of attacks on central energy and electricity facilities that could “push Iran back into the dark ages.”

The urgency of the situation was underscored by a scheduled security assessment led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at 8 PM Israel time to discuss potential approval from the Trump administration for resuming combat operations.

Parallel developments in Washington signal high-level engagement, with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio summoned to the White House amid Israel’s request for a green light to proceed with military action.

This push for renewed conflict follows a ceasefire between Iran and the United States that took effect on April 8, after 40 days of fighting. President Donald Trump extended the truce just before its expiration on April 21, but has since threatened to strike Iran’s energy facilities and bridges if Tehran refuses to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Katz’s rhetoric aligns with earlier objectives voiced by both Israel and the U.S. to dismantle Iran’s leadership, a goal that had been deprioritized in recent months.

Iran, in response, has warned of severe retaliation if its key infrastructure is targeted, promising to strike energy and civilian facilities across the region. The potential for such escalation raises concerns about broader regional stability and the humanitarian impact of targeting civilian infrastructure, which has drawn international criticism as a possible violation of war conventions.
