Kenney Slams ‘MAGA North’ Claims as Fresh US Data Exposes Where Fentanyl Is Coming From

Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney vehemently criticized American claims that large quantities of Canadian fentanyl are flowing into the US, calling supporters of this narrative “MAGA North types” who are being misled.

“The MAGA North types are so gullible, they bought that hook, line and sinker,” he wrote.

Kenney’s remarks came in response to new information obtained by The Globe and Mail through American freedom-of-information laws, data that cast serious doubts on the Trump administration’s decision to declare a national emergency over fentanyl supposedly “pouring” in from Canada.

The newly released statistics paint a striking picture: out of 555 pounds of fentanyl that US border agencies attributed to the northern border region during the last fiscal year, a mere 0.74 pounds—just 0.13%—was traced back to Canada. These figures run counter to President Donald Trump’s earlier statement that Canadian fentanyl constituted an “unusual and extraordinary threat,” justifying emergency tariffs that bypassed the usual congressional oversight.

Instead, the vast majority of fentanyl seized in these northern border states was found to have come from Mexico or the United States itself, with a significant portion categorized under “unknown” origin.

Kenney also highlighted the US administration’s apparent shift in focus from fentanyl to Canadian dairy quotas, which Trump had agreed to in the renegotiated USCMA. According to Kenney, “Maybe that’s why President Trump hasn’t mentioned the dreaded wave of Canadian fentanyl exports to the US for two months. Because it’s pure fiction.”

Further complicating matters is the sheer geography involved. When US agencies refer to “northern border” seizures, they do not necessarily mean physical border crossings. Instead, this large area comprises 34 states, including Alaska, covering 5.8 million square kilometers—63% of US territory.

The White House, meanwhile, has defended its stance through spokesperson Kush Desai, who argued that any fentanyl seizures in the northern region demonstrate a continued need for stronger border security, regardless of the amounts directly traced to Canada.

US Customs and Border Protection records show that most of the fentanyl seized and tied to Canada arrived through established ports of entry, often through the mail or via commercial air passengers. Some shipments were also discovered in parcels transported by express consignment services like FedEx and DHL. A small portion was detected traveling by automobile or bus.

Policy experts who track the US opioid crisis note that the DEA’s own threat assessments routinely cite Mexican cartels as the predominant source of illicit fentanyl. Regina LaBelle, a former acting director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy under the Joe Biden administration, pointed out that the most recent DEA report does not mention Canada as a significant player.

  1. Well thanks to the US Canada finally got their responsibilities in order to protect the Canadian border and it needs to continue. The US are correct. Canada failed to keep its own border in order. So a question to Carney and Polliviere what arevyou plans and timelines to assure ALL CANADIAN BORDERS ARE SECURE GOING FORWARD.. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AND PLEASE ADDRESS FORVOUR FORTHCOMING ELECTION.
I do agree all Canadian parties since 1945 maybe earlier, have been careless with our security. The security of Canada rests with Canadians overall maybe with needed support to protect the artic. But only if our partners will not be allowed special permits etc. So Id like to see this addressed prior to our election and not distract with tarrifs. After all do our taxes not cover this security? I believe the tarrif war has wakened up Canadians to how negligent our governments have become very complacent and tbat is a failure of all governments. Since when does a coutry like Canada allow another power dictate even if needed. So canadian citizens this is our country and we carry responsibility for those we vote into power. So if we the people are lax then that is the type of leadership and goverment we allow.
It amazing how the teriffs have opened up eyes and brains. Keep on watch Canada. Our goverments should be the ones that most ” stand on guard ” for our country.
So till key issues for Canada are addressed no monies should be released to organizations not with Canada. Taxes belong to Canadians.. Canada must be #1 for governments.
