‘Let Canadians Decide’: Conservative MP Files Petition for Early Election

A formal petition to dissolve Parliament was submitted last week by Conservative MP Michelle Ferreri.

The petition, filed by the Peterborough—Kawartha representative, outlines multiple grievances against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, including a deepening cost-of-living crisis and federal debt servicing charges exceeding $40 billion annually. According to the document, current debt levels surpass the combined debt of all previous Canadian governments.

Housing affordability emerges as a central issue in both challenges to Trudeau’s leadership. The Conservative petition cites doubled housing and rental costs leading to widespread tent encampments, while housing concerns also factored into recent Liberal cabinet appointments, including Nathaniel Erskine-Smith as the new housing minister.

The petition references several ongoing controversies, including what it terms the “ArriveScam Coverup,” “SDTC Coverup,” “Randy Boissonnault Scandal,” and “Indigenous Procurement Scandal.” It also criticizes the government’s approach to media legislation, specifically mentioning Bills C-11, C-18, and the forthcoming C-63, which the petition claims infringe on freedom of expression and media independence.

A significant point of contention raised is the current parliamentary gridlock, with the petition stating that the House of Commons has been effectively paralyzed since October 2, 2024, due to the Liberal government’s refusal to provide unredacted documents requested by the RCMP.

The petition explicitly calls for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to advise the Governor General to dissolve Parliament, emphasizing that Canadians, “not the leader of the NDP,” to determine the country’s leadership. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced on Friday the end of his party’s support for the Liberal government, effectively terminating a power-sharing agreement originally set to last until 2025. Singh has promised to introduce a no-confidence motion when Parliament reconvenes on January 27.

Ferrari’s petition has received over 50,000 signatures as of Monday morning.
