Mercedes-Benz to Build Its Own EV Charging Network

Mercedes-Benz will soon match its growing range of electric vehicles with the full experience as it ventures into creating its own network of public EV chargers.

The German carmaker said that it plans to build a network of 10,000 chargers across the globe by 2030, starting with the US and Canada, and then later into Europe, China, and other key markets. The move signals Mercedes-Benz aggressively expanding its commitment to electric vehicles.

The fast charging network will be installed in partnership with solar energy producer MN8, but will operate completely under the Mercedes-Benz brand. The company plans to install 2,500 high-powered chargers in 400 hubs across the United States and Canada by 2027.

The chargers will be accessible to drivers of other car brands, but preferential access will be given to Mercedes-Benz owners. They’ll be able to pre-book charger time at the network, and the device will be designed to work automatically with Mercedes-Benz cars — all they will need to do is plug it in.

The company intends to begin building the hubs this year, with some devices able to pump power at 350 kilowatts per hour, significantly faster than what’s typically available in the US today.

To complete the experience, the hubs will be close to restaurants and restrooms and will be equipped with surveillance cameras for security.
