San Diego officials were still managing a dangerous information gap Monday after police described the response at the Islamic Center of San Diego as contained but not fully resolved, with authorities confirming a major active-shooter response while leaving the suspect’s status, motive, and casualty count unclear.
The incident unfolded at the Islamic Center in Clairemont, a community north of downtown San Diego. Reuters reported that Mayor Todd Gloria described the emergency as an “active shooter situation,” while police said officers were already at the scene.
AP reported that Officer Anthony Carrasco said police were working from initial information indicating possible shooting victims after gunfire was reported at the Islamic Center. The same report said the department characterized the scene as “still active but contained,” a formulation that narrowed the danger zone without establishing that the incident had ended.
The location raised the stakes beyond a single religious-service setting. AP identified the Islamic Center as the largest mosque in San Diego County and noted that the campus includes Al Rashid School, an education program connected to Arabic, Islamic studies, and Quran instruction.
The report placed the mosque in a mixed residential and commercial neighborhood, with aerial footage reviewed showing children being moved away from the property as police vehicles surrounded the area.
Gloria said he was receiving updates from law enforcement and urged residents to avoid the area, according to Reuters. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office acknowledged the governor was receiving briefings and directed Californians to rely on local public-safety instructions, AP reported.
