An 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on June 8 at 19:37 EST, immediately raising the prospect of tsunami waves for coastal populations in the region.
The quake struck near Mindanao, at a depth of an estimated 10 kilometres.
That magnitude was reported by the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, however the US Geological Service has pegged the quake at a lower magnitude of 7.8, while prior reports stated that the quake was in a range of 7.8 – 8.4.

Tsunami alerts meanwhile have been issued for coasts along the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea. The alert is said to be active for the next three hours.
