UPDATED: Philippines Hit by 7.8-Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Waves Flagged as Possible

An 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on June 8 at 19:37 EST, immediately raising the prospect of tsunami waves for coastal populations in the region.

The quake struck near Mindanao, at a depth of an estimated 10 kilometres.

That magnitude was reported by the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, however the US Geological Service has pegged the quake at a lower magnitude of 7.8, while prior reports stated that the quake was in a range of 7.8 – 8.4.

Tsunami alerts meanwhile have been issued for coasts along the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea. The alert is said to be active for the next three hours.

Reports are just now beginning to come in in relation to the earthquake.
