TACO TRUMP: Ceasefire Extended with Iran Amid Fractured Tehran Leadership

President Donald Trump has extended the U.S. ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, citing a ‘seriously fractured’ government in Tehran as the reason for delaying military action until a ‘unified proposal’ is submitted to end the conflict with the U.S. and Israel.

The ceasefire, initially set to expire on Wednesday, April 22, will now continue under the condition that Iran’s leaders present a cohesive plan for peace. Trump announced the extension on Truth Social and in a statement, emphasizing that the decision came at the request of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

However, the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports near the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for global oil transit—will remain in place, with Trump directing the military to stay ‘ready and able’ for any outcome.

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz persist as a flashpoint. Iran effectively closed the passage at the war’s outset, and despite Trump’s condition for the ceasefire that it be fully reopened, traffic remains minimal. The U.S. responded with a blockade, which Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called an ‘act of war’ and a violation of the ceasefire terms. Adding to the friction, U.S. forces recently boarded a sanctioned tanker and seized a cargo ship, prompting Iran to demand its immediate release and vow retaliation.

Peace talks are in limbo. Vice President JD Vance’s planned trip to Islamabad for negotiations with Iranian officials is on hold, with uncertainty over whether Tehran will even participate. Iran’s state news outlet Tasnim reported that negotiators see further discussions as a ‘waste of time,’ accusing the U.S. of obstructing agreements.

Trump, however, expressed optimism in a CNBC ‘Squawk Box’ interview this morning, stating, ‘We’re going to end up with a great deal,’ while asserting Iran has ‘no choice’ but to engage.

Iran’s internal disarray adds another layer of complexity. Trump’s assessment of a fractured government aligns with reports of discord among Tehran’s leadership, complicating their ability to form a unified stance. Meanwhile, Iran’s top negotiator warned against negotiating ‘under the shadow of threat,’ claiming readiness with ‘new cards on the battlefield’ if hostilities resume.

The human toll of the conflict remains stark. Since U.S.-Israeli strikes began on February 28, Iran’s forensics chief reported nearly 3,400 deaths in the country. Over 2,200 have been killed in Lebanon, 32 in Gulf states, and 23 in Israel, while 13 U.S. service members have died in combat-related incidents, with two more from noncombat causes.

Market implications loom large as the Strait of Hormuz bottleneck continues to disrupt oil flows. With the naval blockade ongoing and no clear timeline for a resolution, energy prices face upward pressure, with U.S. gas prices potentially stuck above $3 per gallon into 2027, according to Energy Secretary Wright.
