Another Peru Mine Shuts Operations as Anti-Government Protests Gain Momentum

Buenaventura, a Peruvian mining company, has halted mining operations at its Julcani mine amid worsening anti-government protests.

According to a company statement, a group of protesters vandalized its silver mine located in the province of Angaraes, Huancavelica, and threatened the workers and stole some of the company’s belongings. “In order to ensure the integrity of the workers, the Julcani Unit has begun the demobilization of all personnel and has suspended its operations until security conditions are adequate,” Buenaventura said.

This is not an isolated incident in the country, as other miners have also been affected by the protests. Last month, vandals attacked Glencore’s Antapaccay copper mine, while Chinese miner MMG announced last month that its Las Bambas mine is preparing to suspend production in wake of road blockades that halted transportation of key materials.

The anti-government protests have created a challenging environment for miners operating in Peru, leading to disruptions in production and suspension of operations.
