Trudeau’s Liberals Face Steep Uphill Battle as Conservative Lead Widens

Recent polls indicate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party continue to face a significant decline in public support, with the opposition Conservatives maintaining a substantial lead heading into the next federal election.

According to a Leger poll conducted in late June, only 27% of Canadians approve of Trudeau’s performance as prime minister, while nearly 63% disapprove. These numbers remain virtually unchanged since November 2023, suggesting a prolonged period of dissatisfaction with the current government.

The Liberals’ struggles were recently highlighted by a by-election loss in the traditionally strong Liberal riding of Toronto-St. Paul’s. The Conservative victory there sent shockwaves through Liberal ranks, as it had been held by the party since 1993.

Polling projections from 338Canada paint an even bleaker picture for the Liberals. Their latest seat projection gives the Conservatives a commanding lead with 218 seats, while the Liberals trail far behind at just 67 seats. The popular vote projections show a similar trend, with the Conservatives at 42% compared to the Liberals’ 24%.

According to the Leger poll, two-thirds of Canadians surveyed believe Trudeau will remain as party leader until the next election, scheduled for fall 2025. However, only 63% of Liberal voters want to see Trudeau stay on, compared to over 80% support for Conservative and NDP leaders from their respective bases.
