Trump Orders Immediate Naval Blockade of Iranian Ports After Negotiation Collapse

President Donald Trump has ordered a U.S. naval blockade of all Iranian ports, effective April 13 at 10 a.m. ET, following the abrupt collapse of peace talks with Iran in Islamabad.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the blockade will target maritime traffic entering or exiting Iranian ports along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Vessels of all nations will face enforcement, though CENTCOM emphasized that ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to non-Iranian destinations will not be impeded. Mariners are urged to monitor radio communications and contact U.S. naval forces on bridge-to-bridge channel 16 when nearing the Gulf of Oman or Strait approaches.

The decision comes after a single day of face-to-face negotiations in Pakistan ended without an agreement. Vice President JD Vance, who led the U.S. delegation and returned to Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, shortly after, cited unresolved differences, particularly over Iran’s nuclear program. “We need a commitment that Iran will not seek to develop a nuclear weapon,” Vance said. Iranian state media, meanwhile, blamed “excessive demands” for scuttling any potential deal.

Trump accused Iran of extorting the U.S. through control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, though the blockade explicitly excludes this passage for non-Iranian traffic. The move is expected to escalate tensions further in a region already battered by conflict.

Beyond the immediate standoff with Iran, violence continues to ripple across the Middle East. Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon last week claimed several lives, including a Lebanese Red Cross paramedic, Hassan Badawi, killed in a drone attack in Beit Yahoun. Another paramedic was wounded despite prior coordination with UNIFIL for safe passage. The death toll across the region stands at nearly 3,400 in Iran, with over 1,600 civilians among them, alongside more than 2,000 killed in Lebanon and 23 in Israel, according to U.S.-based rights group HRANA.

Economic fallout is already evident as fuel protests in Ireland, now in their sixth day, disrupt major cities like Dublin and Cork over rising costs tied to Middle East instability. The Irish government approved an emergency fuel subsidy plan today to ease the pressure. In the U.S., the blockade’s impact on oil markets looms large, with thirteen American service members killed in related conflicts and two more lost to noncombat causes.

Commercial mariners await further guidance through a formal Notice to Mariners, set to be issued before the blockade begins on April 13. With enforcement just hours away, global shipping routes face immediate uncertainty.
