Belarus Prepares for War with Selective Mobilizations, Lukashenko Announces

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko declared on May 12 that the country will implement targeted mobilizations of military units to brace for possible combat, intensifying concerns about escalating conflict in the region.

During a meeting with Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin, Lukashenko underscored the need for heightened readiness, stating, ‘We will selectively mobilize units in order to prepare them for war. God willing, it can be avoided.’

This announcement comes as Belarus ramps up its military posture, with over 6,000 reservists and personnel recently engaged in inspections and drills to evaluate troop capabilities, logistics, and mobilization processes. Lukashenko also led discussions on the nation’s armament strategy for 2026–2030, prioritizing defense spending and procurement to bolster combat readiness, electronic warfare, and drone technology. The push for modernization signals a strategic pivot as Belarus deepens its military alignment with Russia, having allowed Russian forces to operate from its territory during the ongoing war in Ukraine, though its own troops have yet to join the fight.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is on high alert, closely tracking developments along its northern border with Belarus. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted suspicious activities, including infrastructure projects and the setup of artillery positions, as early as May 2.

‘We are closely documenting everything and keeping the situation under control,’ Zelenskyy affirmed, emphasizing Ukraine’s readiness to act if threats materialize.

Belarus’ military maneuvers add a volatile layer to an already fraught regional dynamic. As Lukashenko fortifies his forces, the risk of broader involvement looms, with Ukraine’s border vigilance and Russia’s persistent aggression painting a grim picture. The coming weeks could hinge on whether Belarus’ preparations remain defensive or signal a deeper entanglement in the conflict.
