Canadian Manufacturers Blame Ottawa, Not Trump’s Tariffs, for Economic Woes

A coalition of Canadian manufacturers has launched a billboard campaign across the country blaming Ottawa for the nation’s economic struggles, arguing the federal government poses a greater threat to the economy than trade tensions with Washington.

The Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses Canada erected billboards declaring “Ottawa is more detrimental to Canadians than Washington DC,” directly challenging Prime Minister Mark Carney’s focus on US tariffs as the primary source of Canada’s economic woes.

“These problems existed long before Trump was in office,” CCMBC President Catherine Swift said Tuesday. “Instead, he should be taking responsibility for the bad Liberal policies which have weakened our economy over the last decade.”

The campaign emerges amid mounting economic pressures in Canada, including a projected federal deficit of $68.5 billion and slowing GDP growth. The Carney government has emphasized US tariff threats as a key challenge facing the Canadian economy.

Swift took aim at Ontario Premier Doug Ford as well, noting that the province continues to lose businesses despite his administration’s attention to trade disputes. “Ford’s government has not stopped that exodus,” she said.

The coalition calls on Canadians to demand accountability from their elected officials rather than accept blame directed at foreign powers. “Our politicians should be looking in the mirror, not blaming others,” Swift said.

The CCMBC began operations in 2016 and represents manufacturers and small to medium-sized businesses across Canada.

  1. Hmm, where have we heard that Catherine Swift name before? Harper times? Gotta wonder if her orgs are American Subsidiaries or do a lot of business in the US. If so, other country’s citizens would call these guys “collaborators” and anti-Liberals more than Canadian citizens.

    1. Canadians forget that the Harper era was a “lost decade” as well. There are world economic forces at play that we don’t want to acknowledge like big banks, insurance and billionaires that run the world. Good luck for any government to combat these forces successfully. The real revolution is to take these players down….how? I wish I knew…

      1. So you say we need to take down big banks and billionaires cause they are the one’s effecting our countries economy, but you’re totally ok with your PM being the ex Governor of not 1, but 2 Big banks and the ex chair of big business, and one of the heaviest, cross sector invested companies around, all while still being heavily invested in them himself, pushing policy, granting contracts that benefits them all, and who used to be the advisor to the previous PM who SANK this country, who was the WORST PM in Canadian history!?!? But yeah, Harper’s era was just as bad was it!?!?
