Westcoast Energy Limited Partnership, an Enbridge (TSX: ENB) affiliate, has secured a certificate from the Canada Energy Regulator to proceed with its Sunrise Expansion Program, a major upgrade to its T-South natural gas pipeline system in British Columbia. The project, designed to meet rising demand, will add up to 300 million cubic feet per day of capacity for markets in BC, Alberta, and the Pacific Northwest.
The Sunrise Expansion targets a late 2028 in-service date, following a regulatory application submitted to the CER in Q2 2024. The project scope includes approximately 139 km of 42-inch pipeline looping along existing rights-of-way, as well as new compression facilities at four sites: Azouzetta Lake (CS-2B), 93 Mile (CS-6B), Kingsvale (CS-8A), and Othello (CS-8B).

Construction is slated to run from Q2 2026 through Q4 2028, pending adherence to a tight timeline that has already drawn scrutiny over permitting timelines.
Before everyone starts patting each other on the back, this approval took just shy of two years.

If we want to be serious as a country these permitting timelines HAVE to be drastically reduced. https://t.co/ya8OOkhRLA
Finishing on a hard note, the project’s additional 300 MMcf/d capacity is set to bolster natural gas supply for heating, power generation, and industrial use across the region by the close of 2028.
