Google and SpaceX Team Up to Put AI Data Centers in Orbit

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is negotiating with SpaceX, the rocket company led by Elon Musk, to pioneer a groundbreaking approach to AI infrastructure by launching data centers into orbit. The discussions aim to address the escalating computational demands of artificial intelligence through innovative space-based solutions.

The potential collaboration is part of a broader effort by Google to explore orbital technology, as the company is also in talks with other rocket-launch providers for similar projects. This aligns with Google’s Project Suncatcher, unveiled in November last year, which focuses on developing space-bound data facilities. Under this initiative, Google plans to send two prototype satellites into orbit by early 2027, marking a significant step toward redefining data storage and processing capabilities.

Meanwhile, SpaceX is already deepening its footprint in the AI sector through other partnerships. Last week, Anthropic, a prominent AI firm, signed an agreement to tap into the full computing capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis. Anthropic has also signaled plans to work with SpaceX on building out vast orbital data infrastructure, potentially spanning multiple gigawatts of capacity, highlighting SpaceX’s growing role as a key player in supporting next-generation tech demands.

Despite the momentum, neither Google nor SpaceX provided comments on the reported talks, leaving some questions unanswered about the timeline and specifics of their collaboration. The concept of orbital data centers, while visionary, carries inherent complexities, from engineering hurdles to the logistics of maintaining infrastructure in space.

Still, the stakes are high. If successful, these projects could position both companies at the forefront of a new frontier in technology, potentially transforming how data is managed for AI applications. For Google, the push into orbit could yield a critical edge in scalability, with Project Suncatcher’s prototype launches in 2027 serving as a litmus test for the viability of this ambitious vision.
