Iran Boosts Rail Trade with China to Counter US Blockade as Freight Costs Surge 40%

Iran has sharply increased rail cargo shipments from China to sidestep a US-led naval blockade that has crippled its maritime trade since April 13. Freight trains from Xi’an in central China to Tehran, previously running once a week, now depart every three to four days, with May schedules already fully booked.

The rail corridor, stretching through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, has emerged as a critical lifeline for Iran, delivering industrial and consumer goods like automotive parts, generators, and electronics. Yet, with each train carrying just 50 standard 40-foot containers compared to thousands on a single cargo ship, the route can only partially offset the blockade’s impact. Freight costs have spiked to as much as $7,000 per container, a 40% jump from typical rates, reflecting intense demand for overland alternatives.

The blockade, which began three weeks ago, has throttled Iran’s ability to export oil and import essential grains, deepening economic woes. The rial has plummeted to record lows against the dollar, fueling inflation and public unrest, with deadly protests erupting as early as January. President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly condemned traders for profiteering and hoarding, promising strict measures to stabilize markets.

Beyond China, Iran is diversifying its logistics network to weather the crisis. Demand for trucking services from Turkey has risen, with shipments of food and sunflower oil gaining priority. Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan recently discussed expanding freight volumes with rail officials, while a north-south corridor to Russia, backed by billions in investment, is under development.

Regional rail links are also advancing, with Iran exporting diesel to Afghanistan via the 225-kilometer Khaf-Herat line since October. Plans to extend connections with Uzbekistan and Afghanistan further bolster Tehran’s strategy to shift up to 40% of its usual maritime trade to land routes, as estimated by Kambiz Etemadi, head of the national shipping association’s container committee.

China’s role as Iran’s primary trade partner has deepened, with Beijing purchasing nearly all of Iran’s oil. Amid escalating tensions, China has intensified diplomatic efforts, hosting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and urging the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz ahead of a pivotal meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next week.

The blockade’s ripple effects continue to unsettle global energy markets, compounded by China’s recent cut in crude imports to about 8.2 million barrels per day from a prewar level of 11.7 million. As Iran scrambles to adapt, its rail push signals a broader pivot to overland trade, with capacity expansions slated for June.
