North Korea Forge Alliance With Russia, To Deploy Units In Ukraine

North Korea’s Central Military Commission has announced a military alliance with Russia, aiming to deploy North Korean forces to support Russian operations in Ukraine. This move marks a notable escalation in the ongoing conflict and is expected to draw sharp reactions from Western nations.

According to Jürgen Nauditt’s recent post, North Korean Army engineer units are set to be dispatched to Donetsk, a region in Ukraine currently under Russian occupation. The deployment is slated to begin as early as next month.

This initial step is likely a test to gauge the reaction of Western powers, which are anticipated to protest diplomatically. If there is minimal pushback, further deployment of North Korean soldiers to engage directly with Ukrainian forces is expected within a month.

The strategic implications of this alliance are profound. The collaboration between North Korea and Russia signifies a deeper military and political bond between the two nations. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder commented on this development during a press briefing, expressing concern over the potential use of North Korean forces in Ukraine.

“I think that if I were North Korean military personnel management, I would be questioning my choices on sending my forces to be cannon fodder in an illegal war against Ukraine,” Ryder commented.

Historically, Western nations have imposed sanctions and diplomatic pressure in reaction to such provocations. The introduction of North Korean forces into the Ukrainian conflict may prompt further sanctions or other diplomatic measures aimed at both Pyongyang and Moscow.

“Yes, we do think that a diplomatic resolution is possible, and that’s something that we’ll continue to work with all parties involved on to – to achieve, for the reasons that I spelled out,” Ryder answered when asked if the diplomatic resolution is still possible.

Ryder also underscored the importance of maintaining communication channels with Russia. He noted that U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had spoken with his Russian counterpart, Andrey Belousov, to emphasize the importance of dialogue amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. “The Secretary believes that keeping lines of communication open are important, especially in times of heightened tensions,” he explained.

This call marks the first high-level contact between U.S. and Russian defense officials since March 2023, underscoring the significance of dialogue even in adversarial conditions.

During the same press briefing, Ryder provided updates on other global issues, including U.S. efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza and the recent conversation between Austin and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Ryder emphasized the U.S. commitment to protecting civilians and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
