The British Consulate General in Jerusalem’s official X account got suspended while leaving an identical diplomatic statement about Palestinian detainees online through the European Union’s verified account, creating an enforcement mismatch that the platform has not explained.
The consulate profile displayed an “Account suspended” notice on July 20, one day after the mission posted a four-part statement criticizing Israel’s use of detention without formal charges. X’s notice says only that the account violated its rules.
The British account posted the same statement that remains accessible through EU and Palestinians, the verified account of the EU delegation to the Palestinians.

The statement unofficially carries the flags of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the EU. It says more than 9,000 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons, including thousands without charge or trial.
Its second installment attributes descriptions of “severe and life-threatening” prison conditions to human-rights organizations. It cites inadequate food, denial of medical care, alleged systematic abuse, and recent reports concerning the health of detained Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya.
The third says detainees should be told the basis for their detention, receive legal assistance, and face a fair trial. The final post calls for immediate International Committee of the Red Cross access to detention facilities.
The EU version remained live after the British account became inaccessible. That does not exclude the possibility that the statement contributed to the suspension, but it shows that X has not treated the text itself as universally prohibited content.

Detainees
A May 19 UN statement said more than 9,000 Palestinians were in Israeli detention when the underlying information was compiled.
UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards said approximately 40% fell into categories involving detention without an ordinary criminal trial. The total included about 3,200 West Bank Palestinians in administrative detention and around 1,300 Gazans classified by Israel as “unlawful combatants.”
Administrative detention allows incarceration without publicly presenting a criminal charge or conducting a conventional trial. Israel says such measures are used for security purposes and are subject to judicial review. Human-rights bodies argue that their scale, duration, and reliance on secret evidence make meaningful legal challenges difficult.
The UN rapporteur alleged that measures introduced after October 7, 2023, exposed detainees to torture, incommunicado detention, degrading treatment, and potentially unlawful deaths. Her office said the Israeli government had not responded to that communication at the time of publication.
Those allegations are not uncontested. The Israel Prison Service has repeatedly said prisoners are held according to law and has rejected claims of torture, starvation, abuse, and denial of medical treatment.

The diplomatic statement also invokes a concrete Israeli court decision. On June 3, Israel’s Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court of Justice, unanimously overturned the government’s sweeping prohibition on ICRC visits to Palestinian security detainees in prison-service and military facilities. The court found that the blanket policy lacked a sufficient legal basis and ordered it canceled, according to Israeli coverage and a subsequent legal analysis.
Israel introduced the restriction after the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. The state argued that security interests justified suspending visits while Israeli hostages were being held.
The diplomatic missions welcomed the judgment but urged its “full implementation.” Their thread did not specify which facilities, if any, had resumed individual ICRC visits by July 19.
Abu Safiya, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained since December 27, 2024, without a criminal charge. Israel has held him under its Unlawful Combatants Law. The Israeli military has said he was suspected of cooperating with or working for Hamas.
Hospital staff and international organizations that worked with him have denied that allegation. His lawyer, Nasser Odeh, and Physicians for Human Rights Israel said Abu Safiya appeared extremely weak during a July 2 visit and struggled to sit upright. A UN commission subsequently called for his release and cited reports of severe abuse.
The Israel Prison Service described the commission’s allegations as false and without a factual basis. It has also declined to provide detailed public information about Abu Safiya’s health, citing medical privacy.
