Poilievre Attacks Carney On Plane Food Spending: “Out Of Touch”

  • The fight over Carney’s aircraft catering costs shows how incomplete expense disclosure can turn a routine government travel line into a potent affordability attack.

A $195,400 aircraft catering line has opened a larger transparency fight over how Ottawa explains prime ministerial travel costs when the released totals are politically vivid but operationally incomplete.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre used the figure to attack Prime Minister Mark Carney as “out of touch,” saying the spending amounted to about $200,000 for three flights while Canadians face record food bank demand. The rounded number comes from Canadian Taxpayers Federation reporting on three 2025 international trips.

The House of Commons record shows Conservative MP Philip Lawrence asked for Carney’s international travel expenses from March 14, 2025 onward, including hotel costs, aircraft catering, and hotel names. The government answered on January 26, 2026 through four federal institutions.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation said the relevant catering costs were $52,610 for a March 2025 trip to London, $93,780 for a May 2025 trip to Rome, and $49,043 for a June 2025 trip to Brussels and the Netherlands. Together, those three figures total $195,433, which the group and opposition critics have framed as roughly $195,400 or $200,000 depending on context.

Poilievre’s post placed the reported catering bill beside food bank usage, arguing that Carney receives more perks while Canadians face higher costs.

The food bank figure behind that contrast is real. Food Banks Canada reported 2,165,776 food bank visits in March 2025, up 5.15% from 2024 and 99.37% from 2019. Children accounted for 711,770 visits, or about one-third of total usage.

However, that does not prove a causal connection between aircraft catering and food insecurity.

Nevertheless, a stronger government response would need more than saying international travel is necessary. It would need to show how the bill was built.

  1. Perhaps Pollievre should produce his travel costs paid by the taxpayers. It should also provide the number of people travelling and staying in hotels ans such. Apples to Apples.

  2. you’ve been misinformed, Pierre’s expenses are processed through his MP office, where as Carney (and JT) process theirs through the PMO, not their MP office. so yes, Pierre’s expenses were higher than Carney (and JTs) MP office. but not overall.

  3. But why don’t we talk about Poilievre’s personal expenses exceeding those of both Trudeau and Singh combined?!?! Have we forgotten about that? I think we’re talking about calling the black kettle black. STFU PP! You’re nothing but a freeloader to the Canadian taxpayer!
