No Dice: Post-Budget Poll Shows Conservative Support Rising and Liberal Support Falling

The 2024 budget certainly did not have the impact that Liberals were going for, at least according to a Nanos survey for the week ending April 26.

The survey, which involved 1,105 randomly selected Canadians aged 18 and older, found that support from decided voters for the Conservative Party is up 10 percentage points. For the Liberal Party, it’s down 9 percentage points putting the figures at 43.6% to 23.7%.

The NDP secured the third spot with 16.3% support, followed by the Bloc Québécois at 8.3%, the Green Party at 4.0%, and the People’s Party at 3.0%. The poll’s margin of error is ±3.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

When asked about their preferred Prime Minister, 37.1% of respondents chose Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, while just 19.0% selected incumbent Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was the preference of 12.5% of those surveyed.

The Nanos Party Power Index, a composite measure of federal party brands based on various factors, placed the Conservatives at 56.0 points, well ahead of the NDP at 41.7 points and the Liberals at 40.7 points. The Bloc Québécois, Green Party, and People’s Party scored 44.5, 30.7, and 24.8 points, respectively.

Regarding the qualities of a good political leader, 46.8% of respondents believed Pierre Poilievre possesses these attributes, while only 35.5% felt the same about Justin Trudeau. Jagmeet Singh fared better, with 40.6% of those surveyed considering him to have the qualities of a good leader.

The widening gap between the two dominant parties, which notably showed almost the same figures as the Abacus survey from before the 2024 budget announcement, and Trudeau’s continuous drop in popularity is the reaction to Canadians’ growing frustrations over the rising cost of living. The survey showed that the top issues, respectively, are jobs/the economy, inflation, and of course housing.
