NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh conceded defeat in Burnaby Central and announced his resignation as party leader.
Singh, who lost his newly assigned riding to Liberal candidate Wade Chang, acknowledged his party’s disastrous performance in a brief and somber concession speech.
“I’ll be stepping down as party leader as soon as an interim leader can be appointed,” Singh said, while congratulating Chang and Liberal Leader Mark Carney on their victories.
Singh’s defeat was compounded by the elimination of his previous Burnaby South stronghold following the 2022 redistribution, leaving him politically displaced both figuratively and literally.
Beyond Singh’s personal loss, the NDP suffered a catastrophic national showing. As of the latest projections, the NDP was elected or leading in just 11 ridings, down sharply from the 25 seats they held at dissolution. This total places them below the threshold needed to retain official party status, which under current House of Commons rules requires twelve seats. Without recognized party status, the NDP would lose critical parliamentary privileges, including guaranteed speaking time, committee representation, and party funding.
In popular vote terms, the NDP cratered to around 9%, compared to 15.9% in the 2021 election and 16% in 2019. The drop was most acute in traditional strongholds like British Columbia and Ontario, where NDP candidates were overwhelmed by tactical voting in favor of Liberals or squeezed out entirely by Conservative surges.
Despite the brutal losses, Singh attempted to project resilience. “I’m disappointed that we could not win more seats but I’m not disappointed in our movement,” he said, urging supporters to “choose hope over fear and optimism over despair.” He added defiantly, “We aren’t going anywhere.”
Singh’s leadership tenure, which began in 2017 with promises of rejuvenating the left, ultimately ended in retrenchment rather than revival. While he gained public visibility during key debates on affordability, health care, and racial justice, the NDP’s support consistently eroded at the ballot box.
