US House Bill Introduced: Color Greenland “Red, White, and Blueland”

In a move that has sparked diplomatic head-scratching, Republican Rep. Buddy Carter introduced legislation that would authorize President Donald Trump to acquire Greenland from Denmark and rebrand the Arctic territory as “Red, White, and Blueland.”

Titled the “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025” (H.R. 1161), the bill empowers the White House “to enter into negotiations with the Government of Denmark to purchase or otherwise acquire Greenland,” citing national security benefits and the promise of adding “the freest nation on Earth” to the local population.

Alongside broad references to boosting American sovereignty, the legislation brazenly asserts that all federal maps and documents be updated to call Greenland “Red, White, and Blueland.”

“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” Carter explained. “President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”

The bill instructs “the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Chairman of the Board on Geographic Names, shall oversee the implementation of the renaming” of Greenland once acquired.

Critics have pointed out that Greenland, home to fewer than 60,000 people, has long expressed the desire for greater autonomy from Denmark. Locals have been largely unmoved by Washington’s overtures, and Greenlandic officials remain skeptical at best.

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has dismissed the sale as a “non-starter,” emphasizing that the island’s future ultimately rests with the Greenlandic people. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has insisted on the island’s self-determination, expressing no desire to trade Danish governance for Washington’s.

This filing comes days after a Danish activist group known as Denmarkification has unveiled its own outlandish tongue-in-cheek scheme: buy California from the US for a staggering price tag of $1 trillion. Citing warm beaches, a booming tech industry, and the allure of avocados, the group proposes renaming the Golden State “New Denmark,” with a special focus on turning Los Angeles into “Løs Ångeles.”

Organizers of Denmarkification suggest launching a nationwide crowdfunding effort, hoping every Danish citizen will chip in the equivalent of roughly $18,000. The campaign claims these funds could tempt Trump to relinquish California—especially, they joke, if sweetened by a lifetime supply of Danish pastries. This satirical proposal has already attracted nearly 200,000 signatories.
