Romania Scraps Presidential Vote Over Foreign Influence Campaign

A foreign influence campaign targeting Romania’s presidential election has forced an extraordinary intervention by the country’s highest court, which on Friday invalidated the entire electoral process and mandated fresh polls.

The ruling upends Romania’s political landscape just two days before voters were set to choose between surprise frontrunner Calin Georgescu, representing the far-right, and centrist challenger Elena Lasconi in a decisive run-off vote.

Intelligence officials flagged widespread manipulation on social media platform TikTok, where networks of paid influencers promoted Georgescu’s campaign leading up to his unexpected first-round victory on November 24. A declassified security report detailed massive cyber operations, including over 85,000 attacks on electoral infrastructure and breached election website credentials.

The scope of interference prompted Romania’s top prosecutors to open a criminal probe on Thursday, examining potential election fraud and financial crimes. Investigators are scrutinizing sophisticated voter manipulation tactics, particularly in digital spaces.

Georgescu, whose campaign largely bypassed traditional media in favor of TikTok outreach, advocates positions critical of NATO while supporting warmer relations with Russia. His rise mirrors growing far-right movements across Eastern Europe.

The Constitutional Court ruled that procedures for a free vote were not upheld, following appeals from multiple civic organizations after intelligence findings became public. The decision to annul the election was based on Article 146(f) of the Constitution.

The president’s role carries substantial authority in Romania’s governance system, controlling foreign policy, national defense, and prime ministerial appointments. Officials must now schedule new election dates, restarting the entire presidential selection process.
