Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh alleges that Washington is deliberately covering up its role in the Nord Stream pipelines sabotage by planting alternative stories in the press.
In a blogpost published on his Substack on Wednesday, Hersh claimed the CIA intentionally prepared an alternative series of events regarding the explosion of Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which it then distributed to mainstream media outlets in the US and Germany. “In the words of the intelligence community, the agency was ‘to pulse the system’ in an effort to discount the claim that Biden had ordered the pipeline’s destruction,” wrote the journalist, citing an American intelligence source.
He affirmed that the CIA already completed the mission by placing stories in the New York Times and German newspaper Die Zeit insisting that the “ad hoc ‘off the books’ operation” was conducted by a “pro-Ukrainian group” using a luxury yacht to place underwater explosives atop the pipelines. “It was a total fabrication by American intelligence that was passed along to the Germans, and aimed at discrediting your story,” the source told him, Hersh wrote.
“The disinformation professionals inside the CIA understand that a propaganda gambit can only work if those on receiving are desperate for a story that can diminish or displace an unwanted truth. And the truth in question is that President Joe Biden authorized the destruction of the pipelines,” the famed journalist added.
Last month, Hersh published a scathing report on the Nord Stream explosions, alleging Washington orchestrated and carried out the attack with the help of NATO. The Biden administration denied the claim, while several US media organizations instead laid blame on Ukraine.
