CIBC is facing online speculation about possible job cuts, but there is still no public confirmation that the Canadian bank is preparing a mass layoff.
The claims surfaced in Reddit’s r/CIBC forum, where anonymous users alleged that roles had already been eliminated or that more layoffs could arrive soon. One post claimed “hundreds” of full-time employees had lost jobs while another said it had heard “rumblings” of a few thousand layoffs, mostly in corporate offices.
It is worth noting that these posts are anonymous, have not been independently verified, and the accounts posting appear to have limited visible history.
What would the layoffs be about, if true? On financials, CIBC reported net income of $2.47 billion for Q2 2026, up from $2.01 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose 14% to $8.01 billion, while adjusted earnings per diluted share increased 24% to $2.54. The bank’s Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 13.6% at April 30, compared with 13.4% at the end of the previous quarter.
Those numbers do not point to a bank under obvious financial stress. They do, however, show why the rumor has gained attention. Layoff talk lands differently when a bank is reporting higher profit, stronger capital, and enough flexibility to announce a new share buyback.
On June 4, CIBC said it had received Toronto Stock Exchange approval to repurchase up to 30 million common shares, representing about 3.3% of its issued and outstanding common shares as of May 31. The bank said the buyback had first been announced on May 28, the same day it released second-quarter results.
The expense line is the main pressure point. CIBC’s second-quarter shareholder report said non-interest expenses increased year over year, with higher employee-related compensation and technology costs among the drivers.
However, the Reddit claims may reflect real employee anxiety, but they are not enough on their own to establish that a mass layoff is underway. One post asked about severance calculations for a 55-year-old employee with 30 years of service, including pension-related concerns.
For now, the cleanest answer is this: CIBC has not confirmed a mass layoff. Reddit posts have raised concern, but they remain anonymous and unverified. The confirmed story is that a profitable bank with rising costs is facing employee anxiety online, and the gap between those two facts is what makes the rumor combustible.
