Ontario to See Its First Public Hydrogen Refilling Station

Toronto’s Pearson Airport is set to become the site of Ontario’s first public hydrogen refueling station, according to an announcement by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Carlsun Energy.

The refueling station, capable of servicing both cars and transport trucks, will be built, owned, and operated by Carlsun, with a $1 million investment from Natural Resources Canada making it possible. There are currently only five retail hydrogen stations in Canada, four of which are located in British Columbia and one in Quebec.

The project aims to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon hydrogen at the station. Carlsun President Jason Van Geel emphasized the importance of deploying hydrogen infrastructure in Ontario’s transportation corridors, given the significant emissions from the sector.

“We truly hope this is the start of a rollout of stations along major transportation corridors across Ontario,” said Van Geel at the press conference.

Hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel that can be extracted from sources like water and methane. It is commonly used in fuel-cell-powered electric vehicles and produces no greenhouse gases or other pollutants. The intended customers for the station include everyday and commercial ground vehicles, as well as the GTAA’s own vehicles.

The GTAA plans to procure five hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles for its light fleet as a first step into hydrogen adoption. The station will also be equipped to accommodate larger vehicles, such as 18-wheelers. The GTAA highlighted the station as part of its commitment to clean and efficient energy solutions.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said that the new station would contribute to the growth of supply chains while combating climate change. Natural Resources Canada’s hydrogen strategy aims to position Canada as a global leader in clean hydrogen production, utilization, and exportation. The country has already signed a deal with Germany to establish a transatlantic hydrogen supply chain, with initial deliveries expected by 2025.
