9 in 10 Canadians Say ‘No’ to US Annexation as Trump’s Threats Intensify

A new Angus Reid Institute poll reveals that approximately 90% of Canadians would vote against joining the United States if faced with a referendum on the issue, despite escalating trade tensions and annexation rhetoric from US President Donald Trump.

The survey, released March 12, comes as Trump continues to intensify tariffs on Canadian goods and make threatening statements about Canada. According to the poll, 54% of Canadians now believe Trump is serious about annexation, a 22-point increase from January.

“For the second time in 2025, Angus Reid Institute finds nine-in-10 Canadians saying they would vote ‘no’ to joining the United States if given the option,” the report states. The overwhelming rejection crosses demographic lines, with strong opposition across all age groups, genders, and political affiliations.

The data shows Conservative Party supporters are most likely to entertain the idea of joining the US, with 21% saying they would vote yes in a referendum. This number increases to 33% when Conservative voters are asked how they would respond if the Liberals formed another majority government.

By comparison, only 2% of Liberal voters, 3% of NDP supporters, and 1% of Bloc Québécois voters would favor joining the United States.

The poll also examined American attitudes toward absorbing Canada, finding limited interest. Only about one-in-five Americans and 44% of Trump voters express interest in seeing Canada join the US Furthermore, when asked specifically about annexation methods, just 6% of Americans would support using political and economic pressure, while a mere 2% would approve of military force.

Even among Trump’s own supporters, 42% said they would only want Canada if Canadians themselves desired it, while 44% expressed no interest in the issue at all.

Trump recently imposed a 25% blanket tariff on Canadian goods and a 10% levy on Canadian energy before partially pausing these duties for a month. Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney will soon take over leadership from Justin Trudeau amid these tensions. Trudeau has described Trump’s actions as an attempt to “collapse” the Canadian economy and facilitate annexation.

The survey also refutes claims by TV personality Kevin O’Leary, who recently suggested half of Canadians would be interested in joining the US. Angus Reid data consistently shows about 90% of Canadians reject the idea.

The poll was conducted as Carney prepares to become Canada’s 24th prime minister and face an imminent federal election where these US-Canada tensions will likely play a significant role.
